More Tom Cruise discussion

Yep, for the past two weeks we actually have been discussing God and Tom Cruise movies. I know, I know, but this is the last one.

Here's one difference between God and the hero in a Tom Cruise movie: there is no villain that can compete with God.

Part of what makes a good movie is having a villain that's equally as capable and evil as the hero is capable and good. To make a story interesting, they almost have to be polar opposites who are pulling with the same strength but in different directions. If the villain is weak and pathetic, or if the hero is perfect and no one can compare to him, well then, the movie is boring. There's no drama, no tension, no wondering IF the hero is going to be able to win in the end. It's obvious of course he will, so why am I watching this movie in the first place?

Often without realizing it, we can take that mindset and push it on Scripture. We look at the conflict between satan and God and talk, pray, or teach as if they are two competing sides of the same coin. Sometimes we even live as if they are equal and opposites. 

But satan is not God's equal.

The reality is, God has no equal. He is God alone.

Satan, like the rest of creation, is a created being. He has a beginning. There is a limit to what he can do. He does not have free reign. He cannot create. He does not have all power, all authority, or all knowledge. He was created like the rest of the universe.

It's good to occasionally remind ourselves, God is God alone. And one day, the universe will see and acknowledge this. All of the universe. Every single part. Both the seen and the unseen will bow before the throne of the One True God. Even satan.
